READ for RMHC-CR is a reading-based community service program that runs in partnership with area elementary and middle schools from November through March each school year. During a school’s reading month, students gather sponsorships from family and friends for reading they will do throughout the month. All the donations they earn are used to provide love and support to families served by RMHC of the Capital Region as they deal with serious childhood illnesses and injuries.

Since 2014, READ for RMHC-CR students have raised over $2.1 million to help kids just like them!

Over the past 11 years, Director of READ for RMHC-CR Nancy Damato has been the face and driving force behind this incredibly successful program. Her efforts have empowered thousands of young readers to strengthen their reading skills, learn about the importance of community service, and make a real difference in the lives of others. In June, Nancy will pass the READ for RMHC-CR torch as she begins a new chapter in her story – retirement! We will be forever grateful to Nancy for creating the READ for RMHC-CR program and building it into something truly amazing. On behalf of the countless families and hundreds of schools Nancy has engaged over the years, we offer our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for her many years of dedicated service.

While the end of the school year is fast approaching, we are already ramping up for READ for RMHC-CR 2025-2026! Amy McGeady has joined our team as the READ for RMHC-CR Manager to carry the program forward and looks forward to meeting with our wonderful schools and engaging with our amazing student participants, so stay tuned for exciting updates from Amy!
