About the Author: Catherine Zampier is a former elementary substitute teacher/teaching assistant and author of the picture book, One of Thirteen, which was inspired by her mother living in the Albany County hamlet of Maplewood, NY. This historical picture book involves a train, a shiny penny, and a soldier as well as a large family of thirteen children! Her goal for writing this story is for young students to experience a different time (1940s) and to foster discussions about family history and connections to their ancestry. Catherine lives in East Greenbush, NY, in a 2-dog and 3-son family, and grew up with many, many cousins stemming from a large family. She is also a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and an avid pickleball player.
Book titles/intended audience: One of Thirteen (ages 4-10)
Presentations available for: Elementary School (grades PK-5)
Type of visit(s) available: In person
Visit details: Customized to grade level but generally 45-60 mins in length.
For PK-2 grades: Read the story. Explain the book-writing process with how ideas start, drafts, and actual illustration samples that made it into the book. Students seem to be impressed with the “before” and “after”. I review simple elements of the book (authors, illustrators, title page, etc), explain vocabulary related to the story, and upon request can provide coloring sheets and a family game that can be played at home. Also, fun to have a grandparent or parent in attendance to further enrich discussions. Age appropriate family tree forms available with book upon request.
For grades 2-5: I talk about immigration into Ellis Island, family ancestry, and some of the struggles of that time. We discuss the family dynamics in the 1940s in New York State as compared to current day lifestyles. I often refer to questions in the back of my book. I’ve found students love talking about their family’s history which always generates a lot of enthusiasm and interest.
