About the Author: Desirée Farley is a local author, technologist, and advocate for children’s literacy and empowerment. Her debut children’s book, Ordinary EMILY, celebrates everyday courage, kindness, and the idea that anyone can make a difference—no matter how small they feel. As Director of IT Management at a global technology firm, Desirée brings a unique blend of storytelling and innovation to her school visits, often weaving in themes of curiosity, problem-solving, and the importance of representation in both literature and real world experiences. In Ordinary EMILY, the central character is intentionally left without color to encourage children to see themselves in Emily’s journey—regardless of background, identity, or appearance. This creative choice invites young readers to imagine Emily as someone who looks like them, fostering inclusivity and personal connection. Desirée is passionate about engaging with students through interactive readings, discussions about what it means to be creative, and empowering messages that help children believe in their ability to make a difference.

Book titles/intended audience: Ordinary EMILY (readers of all ages)

Elementary School (grades PK-5); Middle School (grades 6-8)

Type of visit(s) available: In person and virtual

Visit details: During my visit, I will read Ordinary EMILY aloud and lead an interactive discussion with students about the story’s themes—kindness, courage, and the power of being yourself. I’ll share the inspiration behind the book, including why Emily is left without color, and how that choice helps every child see themselves in her journey. We’ll explore how storytelling connects to creativity, showing students that imagination and innovation go hand in hand. For older students, I can also introduce how my work in technology intersects with storytelling—highlighting how diverse voices and ideas shape both books and the digital world. Each visit includes time for Q&A, student reflections, and optional writing or drawing activities to help students express their own “ordinary” superpowers. At the end of the visit, students will complete a special activity from the final page of Ordinary EMILY, which encourages them to reflect on what makes them—and others—extraordinary. They’ll take 2–3 minutes to write down three people they know who are brave, kind, creative, or thoughtful, and then draw themselves wearing the “Extraordinary” button featured in the book. I’ll invite volunteers to share what makes them extraordinary, helping to build confidence, empathy, and a sense of community in the classroom. Estimated Length: 30–45 minutes for younger grades 45–60 minutes for older grades or combined sessions
