COVID-19 Update March 30, 2020

Ronald McDonald House Charities® of the Capital Region remains committed to our mission of supporting programs that improve the health and well-being of children and families.
Over the course of the past several weeks, our nation, the State of New York, and the Capital Region community have taken unprecedented measures to protect the health and well-being of our community. In cooperation with federal and state recommendations, the agency has taken the following actions:
• RMHC-CR and Saint Peter’s Dental Center suspended dental services provided by the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile until local area schools are back in session.
• RMHC-CR suspended volunteer services for all programs to minimize the spread of COVID-19.
• RMHC-CR initially limited, and subsequently suspended, respite and comfort services at the Ronald McDonald Family Room on the Pediatric Unit of the Bernard & Miller Duker Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center (AMC).
• As required by RMHC Global, RMHC-CR suspended new admissions to the Ronald McDonald House. Families already at the House remain there while their children receive care at AMC.
In addition, RMHC-CR has: cancelled or postponed various fundraising and public relations events; significantly reduced staffing to the minimal levels required to care for families remaining at the House; required most staff to work from home; utilized electronic technology to conduct meetings, including Board meetings; and sought alternative ways of fulfilling our mission in support of children still in need of medical care.
RMHC-CR is thankful to the many partners within the Capital Region who are helping us continue that mission through very creative measures.
• RMHC-CR is working closely with staff from AMC to identify the needs of families at the Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital.
• We have granted AMC personnel access to the Ronald McDonald Family Room for their own respite, as well as use of the microwave for items, like Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, requested by children in the Pediatric Unit. (NOTE: This is a priority item on our wish list.).
• RMHC-CR is purchasing meals for families at the House through the support of various meal group volunteers, Board members, and the generosity of the Albany community, allowing us to support local restaurants who are significantly affected by this crisis.
• Schools are continuing the Read for RMHC program – students at 67 local area schools are raising money for our organization by reading.
• Ronald McDonald House continues to house a few families. In addition, the House is providing meal cards and, as needed, assisting with hotel accommodations for families whose children are being treated at the Children’s Hospital.
During this worldwide pandemic, we ask that each of you continue to demonstrate your support by following the guidance of the medical professionals. Stay home. Order from local businesses that need your support. Support the medical staff as you are able. And remember the charities, like RMHC-CR, that continue to respond to the needs of families and children with serious illness.
